Black Butte Ranch

With 36 holes of championship golf set at the foot of the majestic, snow-capped peaks of the Cascade Range, Black Butte Ranch offers the best of what makes Central Oregon one of the world’s premier golf destinations.

From a youngster just learning the game to a tour pro trying to set a course record, Black Butte Ranch’s Glaze Meadow and Big Meadow courses will challenge and delight golfers of any skill level.

Since the $3.75 million redesign was completed in 2012, Glaze Meadow has earned a reputation for being a must-play course in golf-rich Central Oregon. Acclaimed architect John Fought’s complete renovation of Glaze Meadow turned the 18-hole course into a 7,007-yard classically inspired gem.

The fairways, shaped by aspens and ponderosa pines, are generous enough to keep most golfers in play while offering a plethora of shotmaking options. Shots into the greens will be challenged by grass-faced bunkers and turtleback greens that will remind some of golf design’s golden era in the 1920s and 30s.

Speaking of must-plays, Big Meadow is among the courses that made this region a golf mecca when it opened more than 40 years ago. The 7,002-yard Robert Muir Graves design has stood the test of time for reasons that become obvious when you play it: The straightforward layout and unfathomably beautiful mountain views guarantee a great round regardless of the scorecard.

Stare in awe from the 10th tee at the North Sisters peak that juts into the blue sky behind a fairway that turns right and disappears behind the aspens and pines, and wonder how Graves could get the design so right.

Of course, Black Butte Ranch is more than world-class golf. Coming in June, Black Butte will complete an $11.5 million addition. With a dramatically larger swimming pool with poolside service, outdoor hot tub, fitness facility, recreation center, playground, and new bistro and retail area with outdoor dining, the renovated Main Lodge complex will only enhance the resort’s reputation as among the most family-friendly golf destinations anywhere.

The Ranch is also an ideal launching point for the outdoor adventures that draw enthusiasts from all over the world to Central Oregon, and the 1,800-acre destination offers biking, canoeing, tennis, horseback riding, shopping, dining and the Glaze Meadow Recreation Center.

Whether traveling with a family, friends or for a couples golf getaway, there can be no more authentic Central Oregon experience than Black Butte Ranch.  – Zach Hall.
